What are questions to ask for avian history?
- How old is the bird?
- What brings your bird into the clinic today?
- If ill — how long?
- Has your bird ever been to the vet?
- How long has it been owned and where was it acquired?
- Any previous problems?
- Has the bird been tested for chlamydiosis or psittacine beak and feather disease?
- Is it vaccinated against polyomavirus?
- Any changes to the bird such as voice change, attitude or wt change, or change in droppings?
- When was the bird’s last molt?
- Any supplements or medications being given?
- What are you feeding the bird exactly?
- Describe the bird’s enclosure.
How would you perform an avian physical examination?
Start from beak -> vent. Head (eyes and nares) - hydration - ears - oral cavity - crop - pectoral muscles - feathers - musculoskeletal - cloaca - caudal colonic cavity - auscultate - weight.
What are questions to ask for a reptile history?
- What brings you in today?
- If ill, how long has this been going on for?
- How quickly did the problem progress?
- Do you believe anything external could have caused this?
- How old? Sex?
- How long have you owned the lizard? Wild caught or store bought?
- Any previous health concerns or traumas?
- Any medications or supplements being given? Why? How long? Still on them?
- Describe the reptiles enclosure.
- What exactly is their diet?
How would you perform a reptile physical examination?
Observe body and skin (scales, shed) prior to touching. Check for signs of trauma - respirations (open mouth breathing = dehydration) - oral exam (mouth rot) - abdominal palpation - vent.
What are questions to ask for a snake history?
- What brings you in today?
- If ill, how long has this been going on for?
- Signalment?
- Husbandry? Caging? Lighting? Heating? Humidity? Nutrition/water? How often is the cage cleaned?
How would you perform a snake physical exam?
Observe movement and mentation. Use a restrainer if snake is aggressive. Avoid venomous snakes! Check eyes - scales (skin mites) - respiratory - auscultate heart (cranial 1/3) - neuro - palpate entire snake
