1900s
Steel strings introduced = Louder, punchier sound
Perfect timing: Jazz was emerging
Allowed stronger rhythm parts in guitar playing
1920s-30s
Jazz bands grew, and guitars couldn’t match horn section volume
1930s: Players began adding pickups to guitars + connecting them to amplifiers
1940s
Guitars with pickups = Lots of feedback at high volume
1950
Fender releases the Esquire (1 pickup), then the Broadcaster (2 pickups)
Renamed to Telecaster (Broadcaster name was taken)
1954
Stratocaster released by Fender
Had 3 pickups + a floating bridge = Vibrato arm (modulates volume)
1957
Gibson updates the Les Paul with the humbucker pickup
Solved the noise problem found in single-coil pickups
