Q

What did John Dalton recognise, but also what were some problems with his model?

A

He recognised atoms of a particular element differ from other elements. However atoms are not divisible - they’re compose from subatomic particles

Q

What did JJ Thomson recognise, but also what were some problems with his model?

Q

What did Ernest Rutherford recognise, but also what were some problems with his model?

A

He realised that the positive charge if an atom was localised in the nucleus of it. However he did not explain why electrons remain in orbit. around the nucleus.

Q

Explain how scientists used the results from the gold foil experiment to give evidence for the nuclear model (3)

A

Scientists shot alpha particles at a very thin sheet of gold foil (1). Most passed through the foil, which is what they were expecting. However what they didn’t expect was the particles to bend and reflect. Because most of the space was empty, alpha particles passed straight through to the other side but the reflected atoms showed the scientists that there was a small dense centre in the middle (1). This led to the ‘nuclear’ model of the atom (1).
