Q

was the gradual civilization act trying to assimilate the first nations?

A

yes. i think the purpose of the gradual civilization act was to assimilate first nations to euro -canadian culture. The Act required the right to vote for any recognized male first nations. However, in order for a first nations male to be enfranchised, they would have to no longer be considered a member of their former tribe, instead, a regular British subject. In addition, their wife and kids would not be considered members of their former tribe either.
