Q

Steps on how HIV infects the body

A
  1. HIV enters body cells (T-cells), and manipulates DNA
  2. Infected cell (T-cells ) produce more HIV ( instead of proteins)
  3. Virus replicates rapidly
  4. Immune system recognizes cells (t-cells) are compromised and destroys them
Causes the immune system/ immunity host to be compromised leading to opportunistic infections

16
Q

Goal of medical management with HIV?

A

Reduce viral load & maintain CD4 count

17
Q

What’s a Drug cocktail for HIV means?

A

Its a combination of three or more drugs. This treatment is highly effective in slowing the rate at which the HIV virus replicates itself

(HAART) Also known as Highly active antiretroviral therapy
or
Combination antiretroviral therapy (cART)

18
Q

Advantages of medical management for HIV?

A

Prolong lifespan, Reduce viral load Prevention of drug resistance, Decreased transmission risk

19
Q

Disadvantage of medical management?

A

Side effects, Pill burden (too much pills) , cost, interaction to other drugs

20
Q

Supportive care for HIV clients?

A

Regular monitoring, mental health, nutritional , social support

21
Q

Complication diseases associated with HIV?

A

Opportunistic infection
Pneumocystis pneumonia
Candidiasis
Cytomegalovirus
Cryptosporidium
Kaposi Sarcoma

22
Q

Kaposi Sarcoma?

A

connective tissue cancer (commonly with aids)

23
Q

Cryptosporidium?

A

Serious diarrhea, loses 10-20 L fluid per day

24
Q

Cytomegalovirus?

A

infection in the eye lead to blindness (clients with Aids)

25
Q

Candidiasis

A

Yeast infection aka thrust can lead to problems not eating (weight loss)

26
Q

Pneumocystis pneumonia?

A

infection in the lungs caused by a fungi can lead to respiratory failure ( aerosol therapy and deep sectioning treatment)

27
Q

Opportunistic infection?

A

infection that can be more severe with weakened immune system

28
Q

Nursing management

A

Health promotion & teaching of high- risk population
Occupational risk
Avoid pathogenic sources ( that can causes diseases)
Monitor body temp daily ( check for infection)
Nutrition
