Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
a self-regulating process by which a living organism can maintain internal stability while adjusting to changing external conditions
Secretion
A process of movement of materials internally-sucj as hormonal secretion, mucosal secretion, lubrication protection etc
Excretion
The process of waster removal from the body (materials like carbon-dioxide,sweat,tears,faeces and urine)
Mucus secretion
Epithelial cells secrete a thick,gel-like mucus that protects the body from irritants
Endocrine glands
Ductless glands of the endocrine system that secrete their products, hormones directly into the blood
Hypothalamus
a small area in the center of the brain, that produces hormones that regulate heart-rate,body temperature,hunger,sleep-wake cycle
Metabolism
All the chemical processes going on continuously inside your body that allow life and normal functioning (eg.break down nutrients form our food)
Exocrine glands
A gland that makes substances such as sweat, tears, saliva, milk and digestive juices and releases them through a duct or opening to a body surface
Sebum
A sticky, oily substance produced by the sebaceous gland
Regulation
An organisms ability to deal with the effects of disruption by controlling its own inherent dynamics in response to changes in its internal and external environments
Receptor
It is in the form of a sensory nerve terminal that receives the information (stimulus)and then responds by producing a nerve impulse according to the type,presence/absence, or extent of stimulation
Control Centre
The control centre(brain)will process information and activate effectors
Effector
The target of the homeostasic response (from control centre)that would bring about the reversion of conditions to the optimal or normal range
Urea
a naturally occurring molecule that is produced by protein metabolism and found abundantly in mammalian units
