Homeostasis Flashcards
(12 cards)
Homeostasis
Maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment
Intracellular control systems
Communicate between specific or individual cells, only 1 cell
Organ systems
Communicate primarily through hormone release. Composed of three elements (sensor or receptor, control center, effector)
Sensor
Detects change in the variablein question
Control Center
Analyzes the singl from the sensor and relays information
Effector
Elicit the appropriate response to correct the disturbance
Negative Feedback (Give Example)
Response reverses the initial disturbance in homeostasis (Increase in extracellular CO2 triggers a receptor)
Positive Feedback (Give example)
Response increases the original stimulus (EX: Child Birth)
Adaptation
Improvement in the structure/ functions of a cell or organ to better deal with stress
Acclimatization
Physiological adjustments due to repeated exposure to extreme natural environments
Acclimation
Physiological adjustments due to repeated exposure to extreme unnatural environments
Stress proteins
Synthesized by cells when homeostasis is disrupted
