Homeostasis And Response Flashcards
(8 cards)
What’s homeostasis
Processes in a cell organism to keep conditions optimal
What are control systems made up of
Receptor cells which detect change in environment
Effectors (muscles or glands) which carry out response to stimuli
Coordination centres that receive and process information
What’s a synapse
Found at the end of a reflex arc
Pass information from one neurone to another
Electrical impulse reaches end of the synapse. This triggers the release of neurotransmitters
They diffuse across the synapse
They bind to the receptor on the next neurone
Reflex actions
Allow a rapid automatic response
Travels along reflex arc
Senory neurone to CNS
Relay neurone to motor neurone
The brain
Medulla is unconscious activities
Cerebral cortex is unconscious thoughts
Cerebellum is muscle coordination
What does homeostasis control
Blood glucose conc
Body temp
Water levels
Describe vasodilation
The thermoregulatory system detects a change
Body temp is too high
Blood vessels dilate
Sweat from sweat glands
Energy goes from skin to environment so body temp falls
Vasoconstriction
Thermeoregulatory system detects a change
Body temp is low
Blood vessels constrict
Sweating stops and muscles contract (shivering)
Body temp rises
