Homeostasis, Cell Structure and Function Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is Homeostasis?
The Process of maintaining balance in an organisms internal environment
What is a cell?
The basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms.
what is cell theory?
One of the fundamental ideas of modern biology
what is the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic
Prokaryotic: no nucleus or membrane bound cells
Eukaryotic: cells with nucleus
The Plasma membrane surviving in a cell and our blood keeping a stable glucose level is called what?
Homeostasis
What are three ideas in Cell theory?
That all cell come from other cells
Organisms are composed of other cells
cells are the basic unit of life
what is a plasma mambrane?
Helps control what enters and leaves the cell
organelle means
parts of the cell with a specific function
what is the iris diaphragm
Adjust light on the microscope
what is the phospholipid bilayer
@ layers of phospholipid layers are arranged to allow a membrane to survive in water
selective permeability
Only lets some organisms in and some out.
What is a Cytoplasm?
The environment enclosed by the plasma membrane is a semifluid material
what is a Cytoskeleton?
a supporting network of long, thin protein fibers that form a framework for the cell and provide an anchor for the organelles.
What are Microtubules?
long, hollow protein cylinders that form a rigid skeleton for the cell and assist in moving substances within the cell.
What are Microfilaments?
thin protein threads that help give the cell shape and enable the part or the entire cell move.
What is a nuclear envelope?
double membrane
What are Ribosomes?
organelles that manufacture proteins.
what is endoplasmic reticulum?
a membrane system of folded sacs and interconnected channels that serves as the site for protein and lipid synthesis.
what is the Golgi Apparatus?
a flattened stack of membranes that modifies, sorts, and packages proteins.
What is a Vacuole?
a membrane bound sac used for temporary storage.
what are Lysosomes?
vesicles that contain substances that digest excess or worn-out organelles and food particles.
what are Centrioles?
organelles made of groups of microtubules that function during cell division.
What is a Mitochondrion?
convert fuel particles into usable energy.
what do Chloroplasts do?
capture light and convert it into chemical energy in process called photosynthesis.
