Homeostasis, Cell Structure and Function Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the definition of Homeostasis?
the tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.
What are 2 examples of Homeostasis?
- The maintenance of healthy blood pressure
2. Thermoregulation
What are the three principles of cell theory?
- All things are made of cells
- Cells are the basic unit of structure
- Cells are made from other cells
What are the three types of objective lenses and their magnifications?
- Low power lens 4x
- Medium power lens 10x
- High power lens 40x
What adjusts the focus of a microscope?
Fine Adjustment Knob
What does a Plasma Membrane do?
Controls what enters and leaves the cell
What is a microscope with only one eyepiece called?
Monocular microscope
What does a Eukaryotic cell contain?
A nucleus and other organelles
What is the base control knob on a microscope called?
Course adjustment knob
What is an organelle?
Specialized structure that performs specific cell functions
What is a Eukaryotic cell?
A cell that contains a nucleus and other organelles
What is a Prokaryotic cell?
A cell with no nucleus or membrane-bound organelles
What does the cytoskeleton support in the cell?
It supports the cell by making a framework for the cell and an anchor for the organelles
What is the purpose of the ribosomes and what are some characteristics?
Manufacture Proteins and are not membrane-bound
What is the endoplasmic reticulum and what are the two types?
- Serves as a site for protein and lipid synthesis
2. Rough and smooth
What is the golgi apparatus and what is it made of?
- Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins
2. Made of flattened stacks of membranes
What are vesicles?
Sacs that collect proteins and make contact with a plasma membrane to release the proteins
What are Lysosomes?
Vesicles that digest unwanted organelles and food particles
What are the characteristics of the cell wall
Surrounds the plant cell and is made of cellulose
