What is the nervous system
The nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord (CNS)
Name the 3 types of neurons
Sensory, relay and motor
What is the cynapse?
-The gap between the neurons
-The electrical impulse reaches one end of the neuron
-a chemical was then released
-which diffuses across the synapse
-and onto the next neuron where another electrical impulse is made
Do a exam qs on what happens when touching an hot object (4marks)
-the receptors cells in your skin will detect the stimuli
-the receptor cells now generate an electrical impulse which travels along the sensory neuron
-The electrical impulses travel along the cynapse through the relay neuron which is in the CNS
-Then along the cynapse again then through the motor neuron
-To the effector muscle to bring a response
What are reflex actions?
Rapid and automatic responses because they only go to the spinal cord and not to the brain
Factors effecting human reaction time:
-drugs/alcohol
-tiredness
-age
-distractions
Req practice: ruler drop test, explain how you would set it out
-person A rests their arm on the table
-person B holds a ruler above person A hand
-Person B drops the ruler.
-Person A catches it between their thumb and fingers as quickly as possible
-record the measurement on the ruler
Devise an experiment to investigate how caffeine affects human reaction time (6marks)
-get two people that are the same age
-carry out the practical at the same time of day so tiredness doesn’t effect results.
-there should be no distractions
-there should be two cups of coffee with the same volume
-one has caffeine one doesn’t
-double blind trial so they won’t know who has the caffeine and who doesn’t
-this is to avoid bias
-wait 30 minutes after drinking the coffee
-carry out the ruler drop test
