1

What is homeostasis

The fancy word for keeping the conditions in your body and cells at the right level. This happens in response to changes inside and outside of the body

2

Why is homeostasis important

Your cells need the right conditions to work properly e.g. enzymes

3

What are examples of control systems

-body temperature
-blood glucose level
-water level
(They are automatic)

4

Control systems are made up of 3 main parts

-receptors
-coordination centres
-effectors

5

The nervous system is made up of different parts:

-CNS
-receptors
-sensory neurons
-Motor neurons
- effectors

6

What makes up the central nervous system

The brain and spinal cord

7

What is a synapse

It is where two neurones join together

8

What is a reflex and what does it do

Reflexes are automatic responses.
They can help stop you getting injured

9

Some Really Scary Cops Make Everyone Run

Stimulus
Receptor
Sensory neurone
CNS
Motor neurone
Effector
Response

10

What is reaction time

Reaction time is the time it takes to respond to a stimulus

11

What is the pituitary gland also referred to as

The master gland

12

What does thyroid produce

Thyroxine

13

What does the ovaries produce

Oestrogen

14

What does the adrenal gland produce

Adrenaline

15

What does the testes produce

Testosterone

16

What does the pancreas produce

Insulin

17

What reduced blood glucose level

Insulin

18

What is type 1 diabetes

It is where the pancreas produces little or no insulin

19

What is type 2 diabetes

It is where a person becomes resistant to their own insulin so their body doesn’t respond properly to it

20

What is a hormone

It is a chemical messenger that travels in the blood

21

FSH causes:

An egg to mature in one of the ovaries

22

LH causes:

The release of an egg (ovulation)

23

What is one method of contraception

Using a condom during intercourse

24

What is an advantage of using a condom

It is the only form of contraception that will protect against STDs

25

What is sterilisation

It involves cutting or tying the Fallopian tubes
In males, it involves cutting or tying the sperm ducts

26

What is an intrauterine device (IUD)

It is a T-shaped device that’s inserted into the uterus
It can stop fertilised eggs from implanting in the uterus wall
