Hooke’s Law Flashcards
(2 cards)
1
Q
What happens if force applied on a spring (or whatever elastic material is too large)
A
- elastic limit reached (limit of proportionality)
- spring no longer returns to its original shape (permanent deformation)
2
Q
Does it obey Hooke’s law experiment (10)
A
- measure original length using ruler
- add a (known force / load / weight)
- measure new length / extension
- repeat for range of values of load
- reduce parallax error by taking measurements at eye level / repeat and average for each load
- calculate extension
- plot graph of extension against force / weight / load
- graph should be a straight line
- extension graph should pass though origin
- force proportional to extension
