Hormonal Control Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are hormones?
Chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands
What is puberty?
The development of primary sexual characteristics
Is is FSH
Follicle Stimulating Hormone
What is ICSH?
Interstitial Cell Stimulating Hormone
What is LH
Luteinising hormone
What is the male hormone?
Testosterone
What are the two female hormones?
Oestrogen and progesterone
What is the role of oestrogen?
Stimulates the inner layer of the uterus
What is the role of progesterone?
Promotes the further development of thickening the endometrium.
How many days is the menstrual cycle typically?
28 days
How many days is the follicular phase?
1-13 days
How many days is the luteal phase?
15-28 days
What effect does FSH and ICSH have on testes?
FSH - Stimulates sperm productions in the seminiferous tubules
ICSH - Stimulates production of testosterone in the interstitial cells.
What effect does testosterone have?
Stimulates sperm production and activates the seminal vesicles and prostate to produce secretions.
What effect does FSH and LH have on the ovaries?
FSH - Stimulates the development and maturation of the follicle and the ovary tissue secretes oestrogen.
LH - Triggers ovulation. Develops corpus luteum, which secretes progesterone.
What are the two phases of the menstrual cycle?
Follicular and Luteal Phase
What happens when there is a surge in LH levels during the menstrual cycle?
Causes ovulation to occur (day 14) as the follicle ruptures and releases the egg.
