Hornones In Humans Flashcards
(30 cards)
What is a hormone
A hormone is a chemical substance produced by a gland and carried by the blood which alters the activity of one or more specific target organs
What does the endocrine system depend on
It depends on chemicals called hormones which are released from special gland into the bloodstream
What happens after hormones are secreted
They are exchanged by the livee into inactive compounds and exerted by kidneys
What is the other name for endocrine gland
Ductless glands
What do responsenof hormones on body depend on
The speed of circulatory system and on tome it takes for cells to change their chemical activities a
What do hormones affect
Growth rate , puberty. , pregnancy
Describe the thyroid gland
Produce a hormone called thyroxine which has an effect on metabolic rate of body
What does the medulla do
Recents eves nerves form the brain and produces the hormone called adrenaline
Affects of adrenaline on the human body
It cause breathing to become faster and deeper
And heart can also beat faster
What is oestrogen
It plays a role in the development of female secondary sec characteristics. Eg breast hips. Etc
What does Testosterone do
Plays a role in sperm production, fat distribution and maintenance of muscles and strength
What do the ovaries and testes produce
Hormones and sperms and ova
What is homeostasis
It is the maintenance of a constant internal environment
(Skin structure )
Describe the nasal layer
This is where cells are continuously dividing and all using the other left cells nearer the surface. They shed after
What is above the basal layer
The epidermis
How is melanin produced
By specialized pigment cells on the nasal layer and epidermis
It gives the skin itโs colour
Describe functions of the skin
Protection , sensitivity , temperature regulation
Decscribe the protective function of the skin
Outermost layer of dead cells on epidermis helps to reduce water loss and provides barrier against bacteria
They protect the skin from damage from sun
Describe sensitivity in the skin
In the skin they are receptors which give tide to sensations like heat cold pain and pressure
Sensitivity makes us aware of changes in our surrounds and enables us to avoid damage etc
Describe temperature regulation of the skin
Skin helps to keep the body temperature more or less constant It is done by adjusting the flow of blood near the skin surface and by sweating
What is the normal body temp
It ranges between 35.8 and 37.7
What are the dangerous temperatures
34 and below and 40 and above I
How is heat lost from the body surface
Conduction, convection , reduction and evaporation
Temperature cool extended explaination
Amount of heat lost is reduced to an extent due to the insulating properties of fatty tissue in the dermis
Heat is gained internally through respiration on the tissues and externally from the surroundings of the sun
