Q

Assess how IMPRISONMENT meets the aims :
Life sentence

A

Life sentences are the most serious punishments (on avg 16 years served in custody). Judges set a minimum sentence required to be served in prison before they can be considered for parole. Upon release, lifers continue their sentence and are monitored for the rest of their lives. If they breach any terms in their licence they are returned into custody. In some cases, certain crimes must be disclosed to employers and potential romantic partners which enables this punishment to PROTECT THE PUBLIC.

Q

Assess how IMPRISONMENT meets the aims :
Indeterminate sentence

A

These sentences hold no set release date in order to PROTECT THE PUBLIC as these hold the most dangerous offenders. The parole board decides if and when they are released which may suggest prisons can achieve the aim of protecting society. However, these sentences are no longer given out as they were abolished in 2012.

Q

Assess how IMPRISONMENT meets the aims :
Determinate sentence

A

The majority of people are sent to prison with a fixed term sentence. Sentences given between 2 days but less than 2 years will be released halfway through the sentence and are on licence until their sentence is served. This includes additional post sentence supervision and conditions to comply with. Prisoners with sentences over 2 years will serve half in prison and half in the community, subject to additional supervision and conditions.

This may aim to rehabilitate criminals and aid them to lead a crime free life.

Q

Assess how IMPRISONMENT meets the aims :
Suspended sentence

A

Offenders are given a prison sentence but don’t go directly to prison. The court may impose requirements such as drug rehabilitation programmes and if a further crime is committed the offender will go to prison to serve the original sentence.
