how plants use glucose Flashcards
(5 cards)
uses of glucose in plants
-Used for respiration (both aerobic and anaerobic)
-Converted into insoluble starch for storage in the stems, leaves and roots
-Used to produce fat or oil for storage (especially in seeds)
-Used to produce cellulose, which strengthens the cell wall
-Combined with nitrate ions absorbed from the soil to produce amino acids for protein synthesis
what is starch used for in the plant
stored in cells of leaves - provides an energy store
- many plants produce tubers and bulbs that are stored with starch to help them survive the winter
-many humans take advantage of this as they are found as vedgetables
how can plants store large amounts of starch
Starch is a good storage molecule because it’s insoluble, so it doesn’t affect the osmotic balance of the cell, and its structure allows for compact storage.
explain why pitcher plants, sundews and Venus fly traps are often found growing in bogs globally and environment where often not many other plants can survive (6 marks)
Describe where you might find starch in a plant. (4)
