The view that you have of yourself
3 components to self-concept
- Self-image - how you see yourself
- Self-esteem - how you value yourself
- Ideal self - how you wish you could be
What are the 2 defining stages to develop self-concept?
- The existential self
- The categorical self
What is the existential self ?
The child realises that they exist as an independent entity and in their own right. They can exert control on their environment for example push a ball
When does the existential self happen ?
In the first year of life
What is the categorical self ?
The child will begin to categorise themselves as an object defining themselves in terms of age, gender, size or skills
When does the categorical self happen ?
From about five years
Behaviour ( positive self-concept )
Able to control emotions and show age appropriate behaviour
Behaviour ( negative self-concept )
Difficulty in controlling emotions may show attention seeking or disruptive behaviour
Cognition ( positive self-concept )
Keen to try out new things, show perseverance, good progress in school
Cognition ( negative self-concept )
Fear of failure, not motivated lack of perseverance, underachievement in school
Social and emotional development ( positive self-concept )
Popular with others and able to show empathy and kindness
Social and emotional development ( negative self-concept )
Self-absorbed behaviours, lack of confidence in making friendships
