how stalin changed russia in the SU Flashcards
(10 cards)
who were the three types of people effected by the changes
women,
workers,
young people
how were women effected?
+ can now work; more autonomy
+bigger role in society; not just mothers/housekeepers
+ female workers grew to 40%
+better rights than western women
- both parents now working; no one at home
- raised neglected children
how were young people effected?
+ free education for 9 years; the option to attend school
- less disciplined; no one disciplining them at home
- many did not attend school
- kids formed gangs
- scholars had heavy pro-communism propaganda
- lack of restrictions
+- some became strong communists, others delinquents
how were workers affected ?
- them and their factories had a difficult 5 year plan
- worker and family could be killed if failed
- workers lived in fear of punishment
- could also be sent to gulags
- if mistake was made, their wages were cut; causing food shortages
- new focus on quantity over quality
for example… (workers)
- for example, five year plan was introduced which gave factories and their workers a quota to fulfil by those 5 years
- this quota was incredibly difficult to fulfil
- if they even made a mistake, their wages could be cut, leaving them and their family starving
- if their quotas were not completed, harsh punishments would be given
this meant that… & therefore… (workers)
- this meant that workers lived in fear as if they didn’t reach their 5 year plan goal, both themselves and their family could be killed; which would also set an example for other workers to not end up like them
- therefore, life for workers under the soviet union changed drastically due to Stalin as there was this new found focus of quantity over quality.
for example… (women)
- they were now able to work, which gave them more autonomy as they had r thre chance to be financially independent
- they also had a bigger role in society as they were no longer simply housekeepers and mothers
- the government was also so adamant and successful at pushing the new image of the ‘female worker’ that 40% of all workers were women
- however there were also negative consequences as there were limited people in childcare, leaving uncared for children due to both parents working
though this now meant that… & therefore…. (women)
-women then had more rights than the women in the west at the time
- therefore, under the changes stalin proposed, life changed for women due to new empowerment
for example.. (young people)
- due to both parents working, there was no one at home to discipline the kids, making them unruly
- no one forced the kids to attend school either, so many simply didn’t
- those that did not attend school typically formed gangs with each other
- however, studious young people would attend an extra curricular that Stalin proposed, calling the attendees ‘pioneers’. to be a ‘good communist’ under stalin’s rule, being a pioneer was close to obligatory
- even without attending extra curriculars, Stalin put politics heavily into the classroom, by placing pro-communism and pro-soviet union propaganda to the youth
this meant that.. & therefore.. (young people)
- even though stalin proposed 9 years of free education for all, that many did not use it and turned to delinquency, leaving a segment of the young population majorly uncared for.
- therefore, with the changes Stalin implemented into the soviet union, young peoples lives changed, not only by their own academic changes, but the changes to their parents professions
