How substances are formed Flashcards
The particle model was made to help us understand matter
Particle
a tiny bit of matter
Particles are described as
1.tiny
2.impenetrable(impossible to pass through)
3.spheres
4.that are not visible to the naked eye
metallic substances
A metallic bond is not solely restricted between 2 metallic atoms
Therefore, other metallic atoms can approach these 3 metallic atoms and form a bond with them
a collection of metallic atoms(that are all the same) is called a substance
Ionic substances
A ionic bond is not solely restricted between 2 oppositely charged ions
Therefore, other oppositely charged ions can approach these 2 oppositely charged ions and form ionic bonds with them
a collection of ionic bonds(that are all the same) is called an ionic substance
Molecule:
groups of atoms chemically bonded together
small/simple molecules are made up of a small number of non-metallic atoms covalently bonded together
Covalent Bonds:
A covalent bond is solely restricted between 2 non metal atoms
other non-metallic atoms can approach these 2 non-metallic atoms but CANNOT form additional covalent bonds with them
a collection of (small) molecules (that are all the same) is called a (simple) molecular substance
