Why is effective communication important?
- reduce misunderstandings
- speed up decision making
- motivate employees –> clear
- marketing tool to reach target market
what is formal communication?
take place using agreed rules or procedures e.g. board meeting

what is informal communication?
not based on any set measures e.g. convos in staff room
NOT NECESSARILY SPOKEN

- usually outside of work

- officially sanctioned by business
- formal = language used
- many businesses have an established procedure for answering the phone
- many legalities use formal language

explain what is meant by group norms?
‘set’ of rules which may be written, unwritten, spoken or even just implied
vary according to the type of group, setting and type of people involved
what are the two category or group norms?
- implicit
- explicit
what is an implicit group norm?
where there is an assumption that there is a set way to behave, operate or interact with members within the group
what is an explicit group norm?
where there is a written set of rules on such matters as to how to answer the phone, respond to a customer, or manner to address a superior
what is a formal group?
- the workplace = main example
- perform set roles/tasks
- set up to achieve objectives/goals
- shared purpose
- set membership
- functional relationships
what is an informal group?
- group = friends
- social occasions
- less likely to be a leader and agreement is made by consensus
- more fluid
what does a consensus within a group whether an individual conforms to the group depend on?
- shared views
- extent to which group is needed
- purpose of group
- formality of group
what are the types of communication?
- one and two way
- formal and informal
- open and closed
- vertical and horizontal
what is one way communication?
usually an order and has no right of reply
advantages of one way communication?
- easy
- no pressure on sender to justify what is being communicated
what is two-way communication?
sender and receiver of information
what are the advantages of two way communication?
- more effective/reliable because the receiver can give feedback
- receiver feels more involved
what are the disadvantages of two way communication
- takes more time
- sender of information under pressure to justify/explain information sent
what is open communication?
use of language that will be understood by vast majority of the population
evaluate open communication
- reach a large audience
- good for marketing
- good for stakeholders
what is closed communication?
a business may have its own form of communication for activities, procedures and components within the business
