TITLE OF HUMAN FIELDWORK ENQUIRY
What are the Impacts of tourism on Keswick
Why was the location suitable for the enquiry
It was within walking distance from where we were staying
Data collection method for importance of tourism
QUESTIONAIRE
We carried out surveys to gather the impact and importance of tourism by asking members of the public for the purpose of their visit, their method of transport and how much time they would be spending in Keswick
- the surveys were multiple choice with a ‘other’ option for most of them
-selection of options to choose from
Data collection methods to investigate the damage that tourists can have on the natural environment
We conducted an environmental quality survey for 22 different sites in Keswick
Data collection methods to investigate the damage that tourists can have on the natural environment
SURVEY
We conducted an environmental quality survey for 22 different sites in Keswick
-we visited each site and measured litter, vandalism, noise, space , building repair and air quality on a scale of 0-4( 0 best and 4=worst)
-22 groups in total, so we took an average of the variables for each group and produced an average EQS score for each site for comparison
Sampling for questionnaire
Random sampling
Sampling for EQS
Systematic sampling
Spaced out as points across the town centre
- each point was approximately 200m apart
Data presentation for questionaire
results presented in pie charts and bar graphs. It was easy to compare results and look for trends.
Data presentation for survey
results were presented in radar graphs then overlaid onto a map of Keswick’s town centre in order to see how environmental quality differed by location. You could see the score for each aspect of environmental quality at each location which allowed anomalies and trends to be identified.
Results of the questionnaire
Questionnaire - 47% of people said their main purpose of visit was for tourism and 23% will spend over £100 which shows that tourists are spending money when in Keswick which is likely to be spent in shops and cafes within the town centre. There is evidence that suggests money is spent within the town centre facilities as 10% of people said their purpose of visit was for shopping. 62% of people said that they travelled by car highlighting that there are many vehicles being used around the surrounding area which could be having detrimental impacts on the air quality and pollution levels.
Results of the EQS survey
EQS - The environmental quality of Keswick was good, with the average score being 1.2 out of 5. The best environmental quality was at point 1 (0.7), 21 (0.7) and 22 (0.5) which were further away from the town centre. These areas all tended to be well managed by the local council e.g. litter bins and further from food retailers. The worst was at point 19 (2/5) which was close to a take away food retailer and a central location with high footfall (406 people).
Risk and reducing risk
Traffic :
use pedestrian crossings at all times
Always stay on the pavements
Contact with strangers:
Approach strangers in groups for safety
Have the contact details of a teacher
Evaluation of methods : Timing
- we could visit Keswick at different times of the year to ensure that seasons do not affect the results.
-We would expect tourism to be higher in the summer therefore the results may show a positive impact of tourism on the economy during summer months.
Evaluation of methods : EQS
This is subjective and scores will be dependant on individual opinions
This could be made more accurate by:
- agreeing on definitions of each score
- working in pairs to check accuracy or one person completing all of the different locations
Evaluation of methods : Questionnaires
Subjective about who asked - chose older/ friendly people who may be tourists .
To reduce this - we could try and approach a balance of people from different ages / genders
