What is a directional term?
A term used to explain where one body part is in relation to another.
What is a regional term?
A term that refers to specific visible landmarks on the surface of the body.
What is anterior?
Toward the front of the body.
What is posterior?
Toward the back of the body.
What is deep?
Away from the body surface; internal.
What is superficial?
Located near the surface.
What is distal?
Situated away from attachment, origin, or central point.
What is proximal?
Near the attachment, origin, or central point.
What is inferior?
Situated below.
What is superior?
Situated above.
What is lateral?
Relating to the side; especially of a body part.
What is medial?
Lying in the middle; especially of a body part.
What is ventral?
The anterior side of the body.
What is dorsal?
The posterior side of the body.
What bones make up the appendicular skeleton?
The bones of the limbs and limb girdles.
What bones make up the axial skeleton?
Skull
Vertebrae
Rib Cage
What are tissues?
A collection of cells with a common structure and function.
What is adipose tissue?
Connective tissue in which fat is stored.
What is epithelial tissue?
Tissue that lines organs and body cavities.
What is connective tissue?
Tissue that binds and supports other tissues.
What is Forensic Anthropology?
The determination of sex, age, genetic population, or parentage of skeletal or biological materials.
What is the Central Nervous System?
- The part of the nervous system that contains the brain and spinal cord.
- Where sensory impulses are transmitted and motor impulses pass out.
- Supervises and coordinates entire nervous system.
What is the Peripheral Nervous System?
The part of the nervous system that contains the:
- Cranial nerves (excepting the optic nerve)
- Spinal nerves
- Autonomic nervous system.
What is the Limbic System?
The part of the brain concerned with emotion and motivation and consists of the:
- Hypothalamus
- Hippocampus
- Amygdala
