Q

What does saliva help prevent?

A

tooth decay and it can lubricate foods and can shape the food into a bolus so it can be swallowed

Q

Where does peristalsis happen and what is it?

A

wave like movements by smooth muscles and happens in esophigous and helps move the food to stomach

Q

What happens in the stomach?

A

it can store up to 2L of liquid and food- chemical digestion occurs here

Q

What does the acidic liquid in the stomach contain?

A

hydrochloric acid, enzymes and pepsin which breaks down protein- mechanical digestion which churns the gastric juices

16
Q

Where does the chyme go after?

A

to the intestines

17
Q

what are the parts of the small intestine?

A

1) duodenum
2) jejunum
3) ileum

18
Q

What can you use to memorise the small intestines?

A

DJ ivan

19
Q

What happens in the small intestines?

A

chemical digestion of lipids, proteins and carbs- there are enzymes, digestive juices come from other organs

20
Q

Where is there peristalsis in the small intestine?

A

when the waves move the chyme through the segmented space

21
Q

Where does absorbtion occur?

A

Lining of small intestine the villi- shape allows lot’s of surface area to absorb nutrients

22
Q

Where do we enter after the small intestine?

A

it’s job is to reabsorb water so we do not lose this and the end is the rectum and things that have not broken down are eliminated

23
Q

what are muscle cells?

A

they can contract, protein fibres that change there length - mitochondria - energy needed for contraction

24
Q

what has to be digested?

A

carbohydrates, lipids and fats, cannot travel in bloodstream
