human digestive system Flashcards
What are the four major tasks of the digestive system?
ingestion, digestion, absorption, elimination
what is ingestion?
The breaking up of the food
What is digestion?
when the chemicals are broken down into there building blocks. e.g: amino acids
What happens in absorbtion?
they are absorbed and will be delivered by the help of other body systems to cells
What happens in elimination?
waist that was not digested will be removed
What does your mouth contain to break down the molecules?
saliva
What type of digestion are in the mouth?
chemical and mechanical
What does saliva help prevent?
tooth decay and it can lubricate foods and can shape the food into a bolus so it can be swallowed
Where will the bolus travel down?
The esophagus’s
What does the epiglottis do?
blocks trachea during swallowing (place where gasses go )
Where does peristalsis happen and what is it?
wave like movements by smooth muscles and happens in esophigous and helps move the food to stomach
What happens in the stomach?
it can store up to 2L of liquid and food- chemical digestion occurs here
What does the acidic liquid in the stomach contain?
hydrochloric acid, enzymes and pepsin which breaks down protein- mechanical digestion which churns the gastric juices
What does the stomach produce result in?
chyme
What do each of the sphincters separate?
one from the espohigous, one from the small intestine
