Human Impacts On Carbon Cycle Flashcards
(7 cards)
Deforestation
Agriculture, wood extraction, infrastructure expansion, urbanisation
In the Amazon alone scientists estimate that trees contain more carbon than 10yrs of human production
Cement manufacturing
The production of cement produces greenhouse gases.
Direct emissions of cement comes from calcination
Farming practices
Most farm relates emissions come from methane and nitrous oxide
Most farms fail to monitor emissions
In 2011 agriculture and farms emissions 6million tonnes of greenhouse gases
Carbon sequestration
Capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and putting into long term storage
2 types- geologic, terrestrial
Geologic sequestration
CO2 captured at its source, then injected in liquid form into underground stores.
Adv- sunk within weeks or months of being captured
Disadv- experimental process
Terrestrial/biological sequestration
Use of plants to capture CO2 to store in the stems and roots and soil
Adv- enrichment of wildlife
Disadv- could lose carbon to atmosphere in a fire
Carbon budget
Relative amounts of carbon that are transferred in a given time period between various stores
