23
Q

Progesterone

A

To prepare the body for pregnancy

24
Q

Testes are situated outside the body cavity. Why?

A
  1. Protect from physical damage

2. Keeps them at a temperate 2-3°C lower than body temperature, ideal for development of the sperm

25
Menstrual Cycle Day 1-5
- Menstruation (Blood and fragments of tissues shed through the vagina) - Breakdown of endometrium - Decrease Progesterone concentration
26
Menstrual Cycle Day 6-12
- Repair phase - Increase of Oestrogen concentration - Oestrogen causes repair of endometrium - Endometrium thickens up in preparation for implantation+pregnancy - Follicle secretes Oestrogen
27
Menstrual Cycle Day 13-15
- Ovulation(Ovum released into the oviduct - Occurs at the peak of Oestrogen - High levels of Oestrogen stimulate the release LH lead to Ovulation - Receptive phase
28
Menstrual Cycle Day 16-21
- Increase concentration of Progesterone - Corpus luteum forms - If Ovum is not fertilised then uterus lining starts to break down at end of cycle - Embryo implanted
29
Menstrual Cycle Day 22-28
- Premenstrual phase - Decrease of progesterone, endometrium degenerates (not implanted) - (If embryo implanted), progesterone keeps the endometrium intact to begin pregnancy, so placenta can develop - Corpus luteum form and secrets progesterone
30
Levels of Oestrogen in the 6 days after Ovulation
1. The concentration of Oestrogen decrease | 2. Oestrogen level reaches a peak and then falls
