Universal Declaration of Human Rights
-Something that had everyone’s rights and what they could do in it - Countries around the world agreed to it in 1948
-Examples include - you have the right to travel, freedom of speech, right to education, the right to belong to a religion, etc.
United Nations
A group that maintains world peace and security - Develops relations among nations
Pyramid of Hate
A way to visually see how hate can grow from biased behavior to violence and even genocide
Indian Removal Act
When the U.S. government forced Native Americans out of their houses because they wanted natural resources and farmland.
Andrew Jackson
He signed the Indian Removal Act (to remove Indians)
Trail of Tears
The many paths that Native Americans had to take when they were forced to leave their homes
-16 thousand people died
-People got things like frost bights, diseases, and died because of cold weather
Discrimination
Unfair treatment of a person or group based on their identity (race, religion, culture, gender, etc.)
Prejudice
Negative attitudes or ideas about a particular group based on their identity.
Japanese Internment Camp
When Japanese Americans got taken and held in camps from 1941-1946.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
He said, “A day that will live in infamy .” December 7 - 1941 (after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor)
Attack on Pearl Harbor
-When Japan bombed Hawaii on December 6th 1841
-2,300 Americans were killed in 2 hours
-They attacked a naval base in Hawaii
Bias
Negative or ideas about or against a certain group based on differences without any factual basis.
Scapegoating
The acts of blaming an entire group for the actions of one or a few.
Apartheid
-A series of restrictive segregationist laws
-A social and political policy of racial segregation and discrimination
Segregation
-The separation of people based on their race
-This restricted where people (Black Amercians) could live, work, travel, etc.
Nelson Mandela
A leading member of the ANC
-He believed in nonviolent protests
-Got arrested for being accused of plotting against the white only government
-The first black president of South America
F.W. de Klerk
-Elected for president in 1989
-Served 27 years and almost immediately did away with the ban on ANC
-He released Mandela from prison and worked with him to end the apartheid
-Shared the nobel peace prize with Mandela for moving the country to a non-racial democracy
African National Congress
-Was actively fighting apartheid
-The goal of this was to increase rights of native Africans
-ANC was declared illegal by the South African government and members were sometimes arrested
Political Cartoon
-A cartoon that is usually about a person, event, institution, or idea that reflects the cartoonist’s values or opinions
-They’re used to promote a political cause or point of view
-They CAN be funny, but the goal is to try to sway your opinion towards their point of view
-They’re mainly visual, have symbolism, and have serious messages; makes fun of people in the topic
Antisemitism
-Having something against Jewish people
-A hatred for Jews
Patriotism
The quality of being patriotic; devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country
Nationalism
Identification with one’s own nation and support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations
Treaty of Versailles
A document signed between Germany and the Allied Powers following World War 1 that officially ended that war
World War 1
An international conflict that in 1914-1918 embroiled most of the nations in Europe along with Russia, the US, Middle East and other regions
