Human Systems (Content) Flashcards
(21 cards)
What is the function of the muscular system?
Helps the body move
What are the functions of the skeletal system?
Supports the body, gives it shape, and protects important organs
What organ does the ribcage protect?
Lungs and heart
What organ does the skull protect?
Brain
What is the function of the skeletal AND muscular systems together?
Helps the body move
What are the functions of the circulatory system?
Transports gases (oxygen) from the respiratory system and digested food and water from the digestive system to all parts of the body. It also carries waste materials away from different parts of the body.
What is the overall function of the digestive system?
Breaks down food into simpler substances
What is the overall function of the respiratory system?
Exchanges gases between the body and its surroundings
How does the respiratory system work with the circulatory system?
Oxygen in the lungs is absorbed into the blood vessels, and transported to all parts of the body.
How does the digestive system work with the circulatory system?
In the small intestine, digested food is absorbed into the blood vessels, and is then transported to all parts of the body
Are you able to label the different parts of the skeletal, muscular, circulatory, digestive and respiratory system?
Choose your confidence level according to the number of correct labels.
What is the function of the mouth?
Chewing with teeth breaks down food into smaller pieces. The tongue rolls the food into a ball to make swallowing easier. The saliva, a digestive juice, mixes with food and helps to digest food in the mouth.
What is the function of the gullet?
Pushes food from the mouth into the stomach
What is the function of the stomach?
Produces digestive juices to mix with food, and breaks down food further into simplier substances.
What is the function of the small intestine?
Produces digestive juices to mix with food, digesting food further.
Small intestine also absorbs digested food into the blood, where it’s carried to other parts of the body.
What is the function of the large intestine?
Absorbs water from undigested food.
Which parts of the digestive system produces digestive juices?
Mouth, stomach, small intestine
Where does digestion start and end?
Starts in the mouth, ends in the small intestine
Why must food be digested?
So the food is small enough to pass through the walls of the small intestine into the blood
Explain how does the level of digested food leaving each part changes as it passes through the digestive system.
Mouth: some digested food (chewing, digestive juices)
Gullet: same amount of digested food as mouth (no digestive juices produced)
Stomach: more digested food than gullet (digestive juices produced)
Small intestine: a lot more digested food than stomach (digestive juices produced)
Large intestine: no digested food (no digestion, digested food absorbed already)
How does the level of undigested food leaving each part changes as it passes through the digestive system?
Mouth: a lot of undigested food
Gullet: same amount of undigested food as mouth
Stomach: less undigested food than gullet
Small intestine: a lot less undigested food than stomach
Large intestine: same amount of undigested food as small intestine
