Hydrates Flashcards

(3 cards)

1
Q

Hydrates

A

Contain one or more water molecules in their crystal structure.
Number of water molecules may vary from one hydrate to another.

Water molecules are loosely bonded to the metal ion, can be broken upon heating.

Q

Anhydrous

A

Anhydrous literally means ‘no water’. Substances without water are anhydrous. The term is most often applied to crystalline substances when the water of crystallization is removed.

ex. Table salt is anhydrous sodium chloride (NaCl).
ex. Heating copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) yields anhydrous copper(II) sulfate (CuSO4).
