Hydro Carbon Reactions Flashcards
(9 cards)
Hydrocracking
Process of catalytic cracking and hydrogenation
Larger molecules + hydrogen—-> smaller molecules
Addition
In unsaturated hydrocarbons when a small molecule is added to the double or triple bond
Catalytic cracking
Large molecules—> smaller + carbon
Catalyst is present and lower temperatures making less residue
Thermal cracking
High temperatures and pressures
Is messy and wasteful
Catalytic reforming
Aliphatic molecule (ane, ene, yne)—> aromatic molecule (benzene) + hydrogen
Alkylation
Isomerization aliphatic molecule—> more branched isomers
Complete cumbustion
Hydrocarbon +oxygen–> carbon dioxide + water vapour
Incomplete combustion
Reactions that produce any combination of water, carbon dioxide, soot or energy
Hydrogenation
Hydrogen is added to unsaturated hydrocarbons to convert double bonds to single bonds
