Hydrostatics Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is pressure?
The amount of force exerted per area.
What is the unit for pressure?
n/m^2 or Pa)pascals
What type of quantity is pressure?
scalae quantity
How do you calculate pressure?
force/area
What does the term “fluids” apply to ?
gases and liquids
What is atmospheric pressure?
The pressure exxerted by the weight of the atmosphere
What is fluid pressure?
the pressure exerted by a fluid, directly proportional to the specific gravity at any point and the heigh of the fluid above the point.
How do you calculate pressure in fluids?
pgh
change in pressure due to fluids = densityx gravityx change in heigh
How do you calculate the total pressure?
atmospheric pressure+ fluid pressure
What does Archimedes principlae state?
A body at rest in a fluid is acted up by a force called the buoyant force, which is equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces. If the body is fully submerged, then the volume of the fluid is equal to the volume of the body
What intruments can be used to measure pressure?
barometer and manometer
What does a barometer measure?
atmospheric pressure
What does a manometer measure?
gas pressure
Liquids are almost incompressible which means… (use pressure)
any pressure applied to it will be transmitted through all parts of the liquid
