I. Biological Macromolecules Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the four biological macromolecules?
Carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins, Nucleic Acids
What is the monomer of carbohydrates?
Simple sugars (monosaccharides)
What is the monomer of lipids?
Fatty acids (and glycerol)
What is the monomer of proteins?
Amino acids
What is the monomer of nucleic acids?
Nucleotides
What are the functions of carbohydrates?
Quick energy and structure (like cellulose)
What are the functions of lipids?
Long-term energy, insulation, membranes
What are the functions of proteins?
Enzymes, structure, transport, regulation
What are the functions of nucleic acids?
Store and transfer genetic information
Why is carbon important in biological molecules?
It forms 4 stable bonds → complex structures like chains/rings
