Define IBS
Relapsing bowel disorder consisting of abdo pain/discomfort assoc w/ defecation or change in bowel habit
Aetiology of IBS (3)
Abnorm SM activity
Visceral hypersensitivity
Abnormal processing of painful stimuli
Presenting Sx IBS (3)
6 month Hx of:
- Abdo pain/discomfort
- Bloating - can worsen throughout day
- Change in bowel habit
How is abdo pain relieved in IBS?
By defecation
To have IBS, you must have at least 2 of:
Alterations in passage of stool
Abdo bloating, distention, hardness
Sx aggravated by eating
Passage of rectal mucous
When is tenesmus worst for IBS patients?
In the morning
Also worsens throughout day
What other, non-specific Sx may someone w/ IBS have? (5)
Lethargy Headache Nausea Backache Bladder Sx
What 2 things may chronic Sx be precipitated by?
Stress
ABX
Signs IBS
Tender Palpable colon
Mx IBS
Diet + Exercise
Dietary Mx IBS (6)
Regular meals Lots of fl Limit alcohol, coffee + fizzy drinks Limit high fibre foods + resistant starches Decr FODMAPs Probiotics
