Joshuah at the Jordan River

A

Joshua holds back the waters, a miracle that ties him to Moses Joshuah 3. Before the battle of Jericho, Israel spent the night camped along the Jordan river. The next day, twelve priests carry the ark infront of Bnai Israel into battle. Joshua tells them (and then it happens) that as soon as their feet hits the Jordan, the Jordan’s river waters pile up in a heap and Israel is able to cross the Jordan on dry land. The priests stand in the middle of the Jordan with the ark until everyone crosses.

Q

The Transjordanian altar

A

In the land of Gilead east of the Jordan the Reubenites, Gadites,
and half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar. The rest of Israel heard about it and set out to make
war against them. Pinchas son of Eleazar went to talk to them. But, they did not build the altar
to offer sacrifices or burnt offerings. It was built as a witness that although the Jordan separates
them, they are a part of Israel and that they will perform the service of the Lord at Shilo. And
they named the altar “witness.”
