What is an Asylum seeker?
An asylum seeker is someone who has applied for asylum and is awaiting a decision on whether they will be granted refugee status.
Asylum Applications Statistics 2024
- In 2024, 84,200 applications for asylum were made in the UK (108,100 individuals), this was the highest annual number of applications and applicants ever recorded.
Asylum Applications Statistics 2002/2010
The last time asylum applications had reached it’s highest point was in 2002, where 84,100 applications were made. After that the numbers fell drastically to a low point of 17,900 in 2010.
Immigration
Moving to another country due to pull factors, such as higher quality of living standards and for access to education/job opportunities.
Emigration
Leaving a country due to push factors such as war, famine, poverty or high cost of living.
Economic Migration
Moving from one country to another to improve standard of living.
Political Migration
Moving from one country to another to improve human rights.
Asylum Seekers rights in the UK
- Fair and lawful treatment regardless of race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation or any disability.
- Support and accommodation
- Free health care (NHS)
- Legal representation and financial support to pay for legal help if necessary
