Identity Of Jesus Flashcards
(26 cards)
The ministry of John the Baptist (Jesus’ baptism)
John was in the desert baptising people in the Jordan and preaching ‘turn away from your sins’
John wore clothes of camel hair with a leather belt around his waist and his food was locusts and wild honey
He told them a man would come after him who is much greater than he is ‘I am not good enough to unite his sandals, i baptise you with water but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit’
Jesus came from Nazareth and got baptised by John in Jordan
As soon as he came out of the water, the heavens opened and a spirit came on him like a dove while a voice from heaven said ‘you are my own dear son, i am pleased with you’
Jesus went to the desert where he was tempted by satan for 40 days
Similarities between John the Baptist and Elijah
Both prophets
John dressed just like Elijah
What did john teach through the story of ‘the ministry of John the Baptist
‘
He explained that his alone baptism was not enough
Three important events in the story of John the Baptist ministry
1) heavens open… only Jesus saw this so maybe a vision?
2) dove comes down… known to Jews as a bringer of good news
3) the voice… confirms Jesus identity and his ministry showing he is gods son
Peters declaration about Jesus summary
Jesus and disciples at ceaserea Philippi
Jesus asked ‘who do people say i am’
Disciples answered ‘some say John the Baptist, others Elijah and others one of the prophets’
Jesus asked who they say he is
Peter answer ‘ you are the messiah’
Jesus asked them not to tell anyone about him. The son of man must suffer and be rejected, then put to death but he will rise three days later
Peter rebuked him
Jesus rebuked peter back saying ‘get away from me satan, your thoughts don’t come from god but from human nature’
Significance of Peter’s declaration
Shows that the general public were unsure of who Jesus was.
Also shows that Peter is clear about who Jesus is, he was the first disciples to understand this.
Peter like most Jews probably thought the Messiah would be a victorious king, not dying a humiliating death
Jesus speaks of his death of resurrection for the first time.
Jesus refers to himself as the son of Man, he is the only person in marks Gospel to use his term
Jesus is angry at peter for trying to stand in the way of gods plans
The transfiguration summary
Jesus took peter James and john up a high mountain
Jesus clothes became shining white, whiter than anyone could wash them
The three disciples saw Elijah and Moses talking with Jesus
Peter made three tents for Elijah Moses and Jesus
A cloud appeared and a voice said ‘ this is my own dear son- listen to him’
On their way down the mountain Jesus told the disciples to not tell anyone until the son of man has risen from death
They agreed but among themselves discussed it wondering what he meant by rising from death
They asked Jess us why Elijah has to come first and he said he has already come a people treated him as they pleased.
Significance of the transfiguration
The word transfiguration means transformed
Mosses = law, Elijah = prophet… both represent the foundation of Judaism and shows that Jesus fulfills the laws and prophecies
It was a jewish custom to build tents for great figures of judiasim
Cloud and voice = gods prescience
Messianic secret = tell no open.
It was believed Elijah would return to turn peoples hearts back to god before the messiah appeared but Jesus said he already came
Significance of ‘entry into Jerusalem
This is later in Jesus ministry when the messianic secret was no more, so rather than avoid attention he made a grand entrance into the city
It confirmed:
Jesus was a popular figure
He was a humble servant (riding on a donkey and not a horse like a king)
Predicted in jewish scripture that the son of David would arrive on a donkey
Significance of calming of the storm
Jesus shows his power over nature - Jews believed god had the power over weather and sea
There’s lots of detail (head on pillow) shows it may have been an eye witness account
Sleeping was a sign Jesus trusted god completely
Miracles Show that Jesus wasn’t an ordinary man
What does the boat and storm represent in the calming of the storm
Boat = church
Storm = persecution
Significance of Jesus feeds the 5000
The amount of detail suggests itnwas an eye witness account
Miracle shows Jesus power but also recalls two miracles in Jewish scripture
- god fed Moses and the hebrews
- the prophet elisha feeds 100 men (with 20 loaves of bread)
This shows Jesus fulfilling two foundations of jewish religion: law (Moses) and prophets (elisha)
Significance of ‘request of James and John’
Jesus explained asking for the seats would mean sharing in his suffering but they didn’t understand this
James and john insisted they could but they didn’t know what he was referring too
Jesus told them the true meaning of discipleship - to serve others and not to be served
Cup of suffering = scripture used the image of a cup as a symbol of suffering and joy
Significance of blind bartimaeus
The crowd where on their way to Jerusalem for Passover
Jesus was no longer concerned about keeping his identity a secret
It was the mans faith that healed him
This story may encourage the readers of marks gospel to become believers
Why did Jesus not want people to call him messiah
He might get arrested
He wanted people to work out who he was by themselves through his miracles and teachings
He didn’t want to be seen as blasphemous
Jesus was a peaceful messiah - showed this in his actions
How is the entry into Jerusalem remembered today
‘Palm Sunday’
Important as it marks the beginning of Holy Week
In Some church services people will hold palm leaves to recreate what happened
How can Christian’s follow Jesus example of being peaceful instead of violent
In Belfast - cross community groups
Campaign against racist / sectarian violence
Peaceful protest to stand up for peoples rights instead of violent ones
Showing respect to people nomatter what
Don’t say things that spread hatred
What can we learn about cheese? So done today from the request of James and John?
‘Can we sit at your right and left hand when you sit on your throne?’
James and John still had in mind the Jewish Messiah -a warrior leader who would be an earthly king-they did not understand Jesus identity
‘ can you drink the cup of suffering that I must drink?’
Jesus pointing like they have the wrong idea of the Messiah -he is going to be a suffering Messiah not an earthly king - he was referring to his death
‘ the son of Man did not come to be served. He came to serve and to give his life to redeem many people.’
Jesus uses his favourite term for himself - son of Man -Jesus also tells the disciples that his life will save the lives of many others - he came to be a servant not to be served. Christian should follow him by serving others
What does the calming of the storm mean?
Jesus will guide you through difficulties if you show faith
Persecuted Christians should not feel abandoned
Jesus has divine power
Jesus is in control and will steer persecuted Christians to calmer seas
What troubles (storms) do chritians face today.
Peer pressure
Pressure on social media to doubt their faith
Some places people are killed for being Christian’s ( North Korea)
Body image problems
Hatred
Distractions
Addictions
What’s do the miracles of Jesus teach about his identity
Miracles are a sign of gods power and love
When Jesus drives like demons, he is identified as Messiah
He is ‘saviour’ - he saves people (eg calming of the storm)
He has authority over nature (feeding the 5000)
He challenged existing authorities and rules about the Sabbath eg. Man with the paralysed hand
He showed the side of man had power to forgiven sins
Tittle - son of man
Jesus sued this tittle to refer to himself
It shows he wanted to be thought of an ordinary person
‘ son of Man‘ in the prophecy of Daniel describes someone with an authority from God
Tittle - saviour
The name Jesus means God saves
For Christians, God saves means that Jesus died for them. He was not a military leader.
Tittle - son of god
Jesus never use this to describe himself
He became more popular after Jesus’s death
Sometimes referred to a king
