What is a “Si Clause”?
A sentence with ‘if’ that talks about a hypothetical situation.
Basic formula for a Si Clause
Si + past subjunctive, conditional
Example of a full Si Clause in Spanish
Si tuviera tiempo, estudiaría.
(If I had time, I would study.)
How to form the past subjunctive
Take the ellos form in preterite, drop -ron, add: -ra, -ras, -ra, -ramos, -ran
Past subjunctive of ‘tener’ (to have) — yo form
tuviera
Past subjunctive of ‘ser’ (to be) — yo form
fuera
Past subjunctive of ‘hacer’ (to do/make) — yo form
hiciera
What is the conditional tense used for?
To say ‘would’ — something that would happen.
How to form the conditional
Add -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -ían to the whole verb.
Conditional of ‘ir’ (to go) — yo form
iría (I would go)
Conditional of ‘comer’ (to eat) — él form
comería (he would eat)
Conditional of ‘tener’ (to have) — yo form
tendría
Translate: If I were you, I would study.
Si yo fuera tú, estudiaría.
Translate: If I had money, I would travel.
Si tuviera dinero, viajaría.
Translate: If she knew the truth, she would cry.
Si supiera la verdad, lloraría.
