Q

What are the blessings and curses of baptism?

A

Blessing:

  • sign and seal of covenant of grace
  • A=Admission into the visible church and covenant community
  • R= regeneration and remission of sins & resurrection of life
  • E=engrafted into Christ
  • N=giving up unto God to walk in newness of Life
  • A=adoption

Curse

  • to receive the sign but not what it signifies in Christ
  • extra accountability for the failure to believe
  • in failing to receive the death of Jesus we are liable to that same accursed death
  • the judgment of God in our sin
2
Q

What is the difference between a Reformed view of infant baptism, the Roman Catholic view, and the Lutheran view?

A

RCC: The remission of sin, remission of temporal punishment, infusion of sanctifying grace. Attaches certain regeneration without necessity of faith.

Litherans: batismal regeneration. faith is created by God in those who are baptised.

Reformed: member of visible church but not guarantee of salvation, just as circumcision marked you as a member of God’s covenant people. Regeneration is not inseparably connected with baptism.

Q

What constitutes a valid baptism to be administered to a person, and why; is re- baptism ever permissible or mandatory?

A
  • name of the F,S, HS
  • with water
    1. Unto those who profess faith in, and obedience unto, Christ; or unto children of those professing faith in Christ.
  • by a minister of the Gospel lawfully called
  • 1 Cor 4:1 This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.

It may be vlaid but still highly irregular and improper. History before American Presbyetrianism. The sign is made effective by the working of the Holy Spirit. Donatistic witch hunt.

Proper or regular

  1. Within the bounds of a body bearing the marks of a true church of Jesus Christ.
  2. By sprinkling or pouring.

We express our firm outrage that so many of its (Roman Catholic) communicants have been taught to trust in the sacraments themselves and to give lip-service to the atoning sacrifice of the Savior. The truth of God has been slighted, but the enemy of God has not had a thorough victory.

4
Q

How many times is baptism to be administered to a person, and why; is re- baptism ever permissible or mandatory?

A

Once. It is permissible in the case of a Christless church (Mormon or JW) as thye do not baptize in the Trinitarian name of the of the FS and HS as they do the not believe in the true Trinity.

5
Q

Answer from scripture the Baptist contention: “The New Testament nowhere commands us to baptize infants, therefore infant baptism is unbiblical.”

A
  • Acts 2:38-39 This promise is for you and your children.
  • Circumcision is used interchangeably with baptism in Col 2:11-12. which was administered to children
  • Luke 18 and Matthew 19 the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these
  • 1 Cor 7:14 the one who has an unbelieving spouse, their child is still holy.
  • Household, oikov are baptized in the NT
6
Q

What modes of baptism are recognized as valid in the Confession of Faith?

A

The confession recognizes and accepts dipping but argues that the right administration involves pouring or sprinkling.

7
Q

Under what circumstances would you, as pastor, baptize someone by
immersion?

A

I would immerse if that where the expressed desire, once I have made clear that immersion is not a higher form of baptism/

  • Acts 9–Paul seemingly baptized in a home
  • Acts 2 - baptism as a pouring out of HS
  • Hebrews 9 - image of being sprinkled with blood
  • OT pouring of water over their hands and dipping
  • Acts 8–not definitive–both went down “into the water”
  • Connecting to different images
8
Q

Can baptism be privately administered? In exceptional circumstances, such as
someone dying in a hospital, how would you baptize the person?

A

There are examples of urgency leading to a person being baptized in a in a smaller group (Ethiopean eunuch and Philippian jailer and Paul) If it is for the sake of secrecy, that is improper. It is best to have the church of which they are becoming a visible member present at the baptism. If it is impossible to be done at the church, I would baptize outside the church but still make as public as possible.

9
Q

Is it possible for an individual to be saved without being baptized; are all who are baptized saved? Explain your answers.

A

Yes, you can be saved without being baptized (the thief on the cross Luke 23:43). Likewise, one can be baptized but not be saved.

“Although it be a great sin to contemn or neglect this ordinance, yet grace and salvation are not so inseparably annexed unto it, as that no person can be regenerated or saved without it, or that all that are baptized are undoubtedly regenerated.”

Romans 4:11–righteousness by faith before circumcision.

Act 10--Cornelius received Spirit before baptism.

1 Cor 10:1-5 For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers,a that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3and all ate the same spiritual food, 4and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrownb in the wilderness.

10
Q

What is sealed in the following systems: Roman Catholic? Baptistic? Reformed?

A

RC: Eternal mark on the person’s soul enabling them to do good showing they belong to Christ

Baptist: Assured of forgiveness of sins, identifying in death and burial, it assures resurrection and eternal life and the promises that God will return for his people

reformed:

  • A=Admission into the visible church and covenant community
  • R= regeneration and remission of sins & resurrection of life
  • E=engrafted into Christ
  • N=giving up unto God to walk in newness of Life
  • A=adoption
11
Q

What approach would you take in responding to a couple from outside your church, who wanted you to baptize their baby?

A

No. I think that could speak against baptism as becoming a member of the covenant community, especially given the vows of the congregation to assist in the raising of the child in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

12
Q

Would you baptize a person who considered his “infant baptism” invalid because
he was not mentally involved and his parents were not Christians?

A

No. The effectiveness of the baptism is not in the mental state of the receiver not in the faith of the parents but in the workings of the Holy Spirit. Baptism is passively received.

WCF “The efficacy of Baptism is not tied to that moment of time wherein it is administered;[16] yet, notwithstanding, by the right use of this ordinance, the grace promised is not only offered, but really exhibited, and conferred, by the Holy Ghost, to such (whether of age or infants) as that grace belongs unto, according to the counsel of God’s own will, in His appointed time.”
