ILM3 Flashcards
(31 cards)
What is the primary function of the GI system?
Bring nutrients into the internal environment of the body to be used for the maintenance, function and growth of cells.
What are the key features of the mouth?
Mechanical processing of food, mashing, moistening, mixing, salivary glands releasing enzymes to break down carbohydrates.
What are the three types of salivary glands?
- Parotid
- Sublingual
- Submandibular
What is the function of the pharynx?
Shared zone for food and air to pass through to the oesophagus and trachea.
What are the three parts of the pharynx?
- Nasopharynx
- Oropharynx
- Laryngopharynx
What is the role of the epiglottis?
Closes over the larynx to prevent food entering the airway when swallowing.
What is peristalsis?
Smooth muscle contraction that pushes food down the oesophagus.
What are the four layers of the oesophagus?
- Mucosa
- Submucosa
- Muscularis
- Adventitia
What are the three muscle layers of the stomach?
- Longitudinal (outer)
- Circular (middle)
- Oblique (inner)
What is the function of rugae in the stomach?
Folds that allow for extension.
What are the three cells of the stomach wall?
- Parietal cells
- G cells
- Chief cells
What is the order of the small intestine sections?
- Duodenum
- Jejunum
- Ilium
What is the main function of the large intestine?
Water absorption.
What are the three sections of the large intestine?
- Ascending
- Transverse
- Descending
What are the three arteries that supply blood to the gastrointestinal tract?
- Celiac trunk
- Superior mesenteric artery
- Inferior mesenteric artery
What is the primary function of the pancreas?
Has exocrine (enzyme) and endocrine (hormonal) functions.
What are the two ducts in the pancreas?
- Pancreatic duct (bigger duct)
- Accessory duct (smaller duct)
What are the key functions of the liver?
- Metabolism
- Detoxification
- Glucose storage
What are the three main regions of the kidneys?
- Cortex
- Medulla
- Pelvis
What are the two types of nephrons?
- Cortical nephrons
- Juxtamedullary nephrons
What is the function of the renal corpuscle?
Where the glomerulus is located; filters blood.
What is the primary purpose of the proximal convoluted tubule?
Most water and salts are reabsorbed here.
What percentage of water is typically reabsorbed in the descending nephron loop?
~25% water.
What is the main function of the collecting duct?
Takes up to 9% of water under hormonal control.
