IM1: Overview of immunology Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the 2 arms of immune response?
Innate & adaptive.
What are the characteristics of innate immune response?
- Non-specific
- Very rapid
- Present in all animals
- Has both physical & blood-borne barriers
- No memory
What are the characteristics of adaptive immune response?
- Specific
- Slower than innate
- Recognises specific pathogens via receptors
- Found in vertebrates.
- Has memory
- Has a cellular component (cytokines) and a humoral component (antibodies)
What is the difference between cell-mediated and humoral immune response?
Cell-mediated immune response uses cytokines & kills pathogens while humoral immune response uses antibodies & chemicals.
When the pathogen enters via tissues, where does the immune response come from?
Lymph nodes that produce lymphocytes.
When the pathogen enters via mucosa, where & how is the immune response produced?
From Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT) that recognises the pathogen & allows the pathogen to enter Peyer’s patch. Peyer’s patch is connected to the mesenteric lymph node so it can produce an immune response.
When the pathogen via the blood where does the immune response come from?
Spleen
