Describe what happened and the importance of the Irish Potato Famine.
During the potato Famine, a fungus attacked the potato crops in Ireland and destroyed the potatoes. It was important because many farmers relied on the potato crop as a main source of income. Many thousands of Irish people migrated (immigrated) to the U.S.
Why was the Potato Famine a major push factor for Irish immigrants?
They came to the U.S. because in Ireland they had few jobs and not a lot of food.
Why is it important to look at primary sources when studying history?
Primary sources help you to understand a person’s specific point of view.
Describe life in the steerage for third-class passengers.
Unsanitary conditions, very crowded, not much food, difficult to sleep, shared restrooms…

Blocks of crowded apartments. The rooms were very small, and often included a kitchen and a bedroom. They were cheap enough for immigrants to rent.

Urbanization is the process of making an area more urban, or populated. Some reasons for the growth of cities across America are growing population, higher paying jobs, and affordable housing.

The introduction of machines or automatic devices into a process, activity, or place.
How did political machines gain their power? How did they help the city and immigrants?
The political machine puts out a message to get support for their candidate. Some supported immigrants more than others.
What is a settlement house? How did settlement houses help immigrants?
A settlement house is an institution in an inner-city area providing educational, recreational, and other social services to help the community and immigrants.
What are the two means of obtaining citizenship in the United States?
- You are born in the United States.
- Naturalization.
What happened to the immigrants from Japan in World War II?
