Captain of Industry
A person who is a leader of their business or industry, and helps to grow the economy.
Robber Baron
A very wealthy person who is ruthless in their ways of obtaining money. (Often have a monopoly)
Philanthropist
A very wealthy person who donates a huge portion of that wealth to charity.
Monopoly
Complete and total control of you business or industry.
Push Factor
Something that pushes people out of a country (ie. Religious persecution)
Pull Factor
Something that draws people to a country (ie. Higher wages)
Melting Pot Theory
The theory that an immigrant who settled in an area would start to assimilate and blend into society.
Salad Bowl Theory
The theory that an immigrant would choose to live in a place where other people from their former country lived.
Assimilation
The term used to describe they way an immigrant chooses to enter society.
Steerage
The economy class section for immigrants at the bottom of the ship where steering mechanisms are located.
Moving Assembly Line
An invention by Henry Ford that reduced the cost of production and allowed for mass production and higher wages.
Corporation
A business that sells portions of ownership called stock shares.
Bessemer Process
A process developed in the 1850’s that lead to faster, cheaper, steel production.
Interchangeable Parts
A process developed by Eli Whitney in the 1790’s that called for making certain parts of a machine universal.
Triangle Shirtwaist Fire
A factory fire that killed 146 workers and lead to new safety standards.
Cornelius Vanderbilt
Invested money in shipping and sold his company to invest in railroads.
Henry Ford
Founder of Ford Motor Company. Helped to create a “middle class” in society.
Chinese Exclusion Act
A law passed by congress that banned Chinese people from coming into the united states for 10 years.
Ghetto
An ethnic neighborhood in an urban area.
Ethnocentrism
The belief that a race is superior.
Nativist
A person who wants to limit immigration and preserve America for natives.
Laisezz Faire Government
A “hands off” government approach. Businesses were allowed to function without regulation.
Child Labor
When children were sent to work instead of school and were often poorly treated.
