Immune System Flashcards
(20 cards)
Innate Immunity
short, nonspecific response
Adaptive Immunity
specific, long-term response
How does skin prevent infection?
- acid - prevents bacterial growth
- physical barrier
How does mucus prevent infection?
contains lysozomes
Lysozomes
enzyme that destroys bacteria
What is the action of a macrophage?
large WBC - engulfs and kills everything foreign though phagocytosis (innate immunity)
What do natural killer specialize in?
- virus infected cells
- cancer cells
How does the lymphatic system work?
pathogens enter, activate lymph nodes, activates macrophages
Lymph nodes
macrophages - attack and destroy foreign diseases
Symptoms of inflammatory response
redness, swelling, heat, pain
Molecule that triggers inflammation
histamine
Purpose of inflammation
increases permeability/blood flow - brings WBC’s to site
Causes of inflammation
- Infection
- Tissue damage
Action of a B-cell
produces antibodies - specific to antigen (long-term protection)
What is the core of the immune system?
Helper T’s
Action of a Helper T
activates both B cells and cytotoxic T’s
Action of a Cytotoxic T
kills infected cells
How do antibodies form long-term protection
stay in the bloodstream for a long duration of time
Purpose of a vaccination
creates antibodies for the antigen
Allergic reaction
over-production of histamine (inflammation when there shouldn’t be)
