Immune System Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is an antibody
a molecule produced by
B cells that binds to a
specific pathogen
What is a B cell
an immune system cell
that produces antibodies in
response to pathogens
What is a T cell
an immune system cell
that recognises and kills
pathogens
What is a memory cell
an immune system cell
produced in response to
an infection; retains the
memory of how to fight the pathogen
What does immune mean
able to fight an infection as a result of prior exposure
What is a Vaccination
an injection of an inactive or artificial pathogen that results in the individual becoming immune to a particular disease
What is the immune system
a system of organs and
structures that protect an organism against disease
What is a White blood cell
an immune system cell that
destroys pathogens
What can a vaccination be made from
The dead pathogen
A living but non-virulent (weakened) form
of the pathogen
Parts of the broken-up pathogen
Genetic material from a viral pathogen.
Through vaccination, a person makes
What are the primary components of the immune system
The primary components of the immune system include white blood cells, antibodies, the lymphatic system and various organs
What is herd immunity
Herd immunity occurs when a significant portion of population becomes immune to a disease, reducing its spread and protecting those who are not immune.
What is autoimmune disease
Autoimmune disease occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own cells, tissues or organs
What are the components of the 1st line of defence
The first line of defence stops the Patheogen from getting inside your body. It consists of skin and mucous membranes.
What does the 2nd line of defence consist of and what does it do
The second line of defence is known as a non-specific immune response also known as a seek and destroy. It may consist of fever, inflammation and blood clotting as well as phagocytes.
What is the 3rd line of defence.
The 3rd line of defence is a Specific Immune response. This uses T and B cells to stop pathogens from invading and kill them
What is an allergy
A result of your immune system mistaking a harmless substance as dangerous
What is anyphylaxis
a life-threatening
overreaction by the
immune system to a
normally harmless
substance
What is rheumatoid disease
an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the joints of the body
What is the differene between viruses and a disease
Viruses have a protective coating which allows them to more easily slip through the first line of defence
