Immunity Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is immunity?
Protection from disease
What are the different types of immunity?
- Natural
- Induced
- Active
- Passive
What is natural immunity?
Generally determined in specific species populations or families.
What is active immunity?
Developes within the body of antibidies or sensitized T lymphocytes that can neutralize or destroy the infective agent.
Ex. Vaccine or inoculation
What does induced immunity consist of?
Active and passive
What is passive immunity?
Acquired by the introduction of performed antibodies into an unprotected individual.
Ex. Breastfeeding
What are the different immunity techniques?
- Vaccinations
- Injections
- Orally
- Nasally
What is a vaccination?
Administering bacteria or other products to produce active immunization against disease.
What is a killed virus?
Vaccine prepared from dead microorganisms, used to prevent virulent disease.
What is a live attenuated virus?
Vaccines made from live viruses and adapted to replicate in body.
What is sensitized virus?
Vaccine prepared from bacteria treated with their specific immune serum.
What are some side effects?
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Pain in the injection site
What are some adverse reactions?
- Anaphalaxis (closing of throat)
- Shock
- Seizures
- Active Infection
- Death
What is VAERS?
National surveillance system for monitoring adverse reactions to vaccines.
What are the 5 types of immunoglobins?
- IgM- Molly
- IgG- Gave
- IgA- Ash
an - IgE- Energy
- IgD- Drink
What is IgA?
In exocrine secretions such as milk, respiratory intensinal mucin, saliva and tears. Prevents pathogenic bacteria and viruses from invading the body through mucosa of GI tract.
Is present in colostrum (yellow stuff the comes out before breast milk) and breast milk.
What is IgD
Is present on the surface of B lymphocytes and acts as antigen receptor.
What is IgE?
Attaches to mast cells in respiratory tract and plays a major role in allergic reactions.
What is IgG?
Located in human serum, crosses the placental barrier and helps produce immunity for unborn. Major antibody for antitoxins, viruses and bacteria.
What is IgM?
Formed in every immune system response during early period of reaction. Controls A, B, O blood group. Most efficient in stimulating extra activity going on; Does not cross the placental barrier.
