Impact On atmosphere Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is air pollution?
The contamination of air by harmful substances including gas and smoke.
What is photochemical smog?
Air pollution that forms from the interaction between chemicals in the air and sunlight.
What is particulate matter?
The mix of both solid and liquid particles in the air.
What is acid precipitation?
Precipitation that has a lower pH than that of normal rainwater (pH 5.6).
How does human activity contribute to air pollution?
As the human population increases, our demand for resources such as food, electricity, and transportation increases, contributing to air pollution.
What causes photochemical smog?
Nitrogen and carbon compounds released from burning fossil fuels react in sunlight, forming photochemical smog.
What are CFCs and how do they affect the ozone layer?
CFCs are released from appliances and aerosol products. They react with sunlight, destroying ozone molecules and thinning the ozone layer.
What are examples of particulate matter?
Examples include smoke, dust, and dirt, which can enter the air from natural processes and human activities.
What causes acid precipitation?
It is formed when gases containing nitrogen and sulfur react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals in the atmosphere.
How can we protect the atmosphere?
By cooperating globally to reduce air pollution, such as through the Montreal Protocol and the Clean Air Act.
What can individuals do to reduce air pollution?
Walk or cycle instead of driving, switch to electric vehicles, and use renewable energy sources.
What are the key points for drawing graphs?
- Label axes with units 2. Have a scale for the data 3. Use a ruler for lines 4. Correctly plot data points 5. Make the graph large enough.
