When should you use the imperfect tense

A
  • When you want to say what used to happen or what was happening in the past
    E.g. Au weekend on allait au cinéma
  • When you want to say what happened regularly in the past
    E.g. Tous les dimanches on achetait des croissants
  • When you want to describe something in the past
    E.g. Il y avait une entrée, un plat principal et un dessert. C’était génial

How do you form the imperfect tense

A
  1. Start with the nous form of the present tense e.g. Nous allons
  2. Take away the nous and the -ons. This leaves the stem E.g. Allons
  3. Add the correct ending depending on who/what is doing the action of the verb
