Imperialism
The domination of one country over another in politics, economy, and culture.
Racism
The belief that some races are superior to others; used to justify imperialism.
New Markets
Places for imperial powers to sell their goods and expand trade.
Culture
The language, religion, and traditions of a group; often erased or changed by imperial powers.
Empire
A large group of territories ruled by a single country, often created through colonization.
Nationalism
Pride in one’s nation, often driving countries to expand and prove dominance.
Social Darwinism
The idea that stronger nations or races are naturally superior and should dominate weaker ones.
Scramble for Africa
The rapid invasion, occupation, and division of African territory by European powers in the late 1800s.
Berlin Conference
1884–85 meeting of European powers to divide Africa without input from Africans.
