Q
In relation to firearms, what does obturation mean?
Why is it important?
A
The expansion of th bullet to seal the bore inside the barrel.
To seal gases in the chamer to increase pressure, increasing velocity when the bullet is fired.
2
Q
What is a ‘wad’?
A
A wad is a component in shotgun ammunition located between the propellant and shot. it expands to seal the bore, allowing obturation to happen with the shotgun ammunition.
3
Q
what is flame cutting?
A
- hot, abrasive powder gases and unburned powder scoring the sides of the bullet.
- decreases the velocity and acuracy of the bullet
- this is prevented by bullet obturation (expansion of the bullet to fill the bore).
