Important Stuff (Chem) Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the characteristics of an Ionic Bond?
Hard but brittle, high melting and boiling points, conduct electricity in water.
What are the characteristics of a covalent bond?
Lower melting points than ionic compounds, can’t conduct electricity.
What is an Element?
A pure substance made of only one type of atom.
Example: Oxygen (O).
What is a Compound?
A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined.
Example: Water (H₂O).
What is a Mechanical Mixture?
A mixture where the different components are visible and can be separated physically.
Example: Trail mix.
What is a Pure Substance?
A substance with a fixed composition and distinct properties.
Example: Gold (Au).
What is a Homogeneous Mixture?
A mixture where the components are evenly distributed and appear uniform.
Example: Saltwater.
What is a Heterogeneous Mixture?
A mixture where the components are unevenly distributed and can be distinguished.
Example: Salad.
What is an Atom?
The smallest unit of an element that retains its chemical properties.
Example: Hydrogen atom.
What is a Molecule?
A group of two or more atoms bonded together.
Example: Carbon dioxide (CO₂).
What is a Suspension?
A heterogeneous mixture where particles are dispersed in a liquid but settle over time.
Example: Muddy water.
What are examples of Physical Properties?
Density, Solubility, Melting and Boiling Points, Color, Texture and Hardness, Conductivity
What are examples of chemical properties?
Acidic or Basic, Toxicity, Flamability, Oxidation,
What are the 5 clues of chemical change?
Gas Production(Bubbles/Fumes), Precipitate Formation, Light or Sound Emission, Color Changing and Temperature Change
Malleability
The ability of a substance to be hammered or rolled into thin sheets.
Example: Aluminum can be made into foil.
Ductility
The ability of a substance to be stretched into a wire.
Example: Gold is highly ductile and can be drawn into thin wires.
Opacity
The degree to which a material blocks light.
